TREE OF LIFE TAROT

The title of this pictorial series is referred to the contents of an ancient Jewish text called Sepher Yetzirah, “Book of Formation”. This mystical work described the creation of the universe by a Divine Breath from which departed 32 emanations called "Paths of the Supreme Wisdom”. The Tonato’s paintings returns the meanings that the nineteenth-century occultists attributed to the 32 Divine Paths. From this point of view, the Tree of Life Tarot could appear as a purely explanatory job, if the painter had not imposed an artistic dignity to his own representations. Already in 1986 Tonato realized a great oil on cloth, "L'Albero della Vita"in which are allegorically represented the 10 Divine emanations united by 22 Channels. With the Tree of Life Tarot, started in 1987 and completend during one year, the artist maked a further effort. In 22 oils on table he illustrates the characters, the situations and the symbols that the modern occultists assigned to the 22 Channels. This artwork is not a stylistic exercise but a real "work of apprentice", because the artist has reproduced to esoteric dogmas that impose precise expressive choices. So, this series is very important because it shows, under the allegorical veils of the kabbalistic tradition, the walk that brings the soul to rise in the spheres of the Endless One and returning herself to the Supreme Source of the Life: the Divine Breath from which comes every thing. The Tree of Life Tarot was edited by the historician Giordano Berti, before in Spain in 2003, by Editions Orbis and Lo Scarabeo, and the following year in Italy from Fabbri Editori.
